A two-month cruise through Australia is being halted following the tragic passing of an older woman who was left behind by the vessel on a isolated island.

The elderly woman had been walking on the remote island with other travelers from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the excursion for a rest. The liner left without her and returned several hours later after the ship staff realised the woman was not present.

A large-scale search operation located her body the following day.

Investigative bodies are examining the tragedy, together with investigators and the official investigator.

The CEO of the cruise operator said that passengers and staff on the ship were notified that the remainder of the journey had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and prior technical problems".

In a statement, he mentioned that guests would be given a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the individuals via private aircraft".
